Changes in the Registration Tax
The Registration Tax is one of the key taxes that anyone registering a car in Spain must pay. Its amount depends entirely on the CO₂ emission level indicated in the vehicle's technical documentation. For many clients, this tax becomes a decisive factor when buying or importing a car.
Why This Tax Is So Important
In recent years, Spain has gradually tightened environmental requirements. This means that:
- cars with high CO₂ levels are subject to much higher rates;
- the number of vehicles previously at 0% now require payment;
- CO₂ calculation methods have changed, affecting the final tax.
For clients, this often comes as a surprise, especially when importing a vehicle from Europe or the United States.
Current Registration Tax Rates
The tax rate is calculated individually and is as follows:
- 0% — Low CO₂.
- 4.75%.
- 9.75%.
- 14.75% — High CO₂.
The percentage is applied to the Fiscal Value of the car, set by the government, not to the market price.
What Has Changed in Recent Years
Spain introduced the new WLTP emission measurement system, which showed higher CO₂ values compared to the old NEDC test.
As a result:
- many car models “moved” to higher tax categories;
- the tax burden for clients increased;
- even economy cars sometimes became subject to the tax.
This causes questions and confusion among clients, especially in Andalusia, where large and powerful cars are very popular.
How We Handle This Tax
Our task is to provide the client with accurate and verified calculations. To do this:
- we study the vehicle's technical documentation;
- check CO₂ data in European and Spanish databases;
- calculate the exact rate before closing the deal;
- indicate situations in which the tax can be avoided, for example, due to change of residence.
For the client, this means transparency, predictability, and no surprises during registration.
