Homologation of imported vehicles: new requirements and key rules

Homologation is the official process that confirms a vehicle meets the technical and environmental requirements of Spain and the European Union. For imported cars, this is one of the most critical steps, and it is precisely here that delays and problems most often occur.

Why homologation is so important

Without homologation it is impossible to:

  • pass the ITV;
  • obtain Spanish license plates;
  • complete registration with the DGT;
  • legally drive on Spanish roads.

Essentially, homologation is the “permission” that allows the vehicle to integrate into the Spanish safety and control system.

Who needs homologation

1. Vehicles from the USA, Canada, UAE, and Japan

These vehicles have different rules regarding:

  • lighting;
  • indicators;
  • windows;
  • seatbelts;
  • bumpers;
  • emissions;
  • signals and markings.

Each of these vehicles must undergo individual adaptation and homologation.

2. Vehicles with modifications or tuning

If any of the following has been changed:

  • suspension;
  • exhaust;
  • bumpers;
  • non-standard wheel size;
  • springs;
  • headlights;
  • steering;
  • structural elements.

Any modification requires certification and annotation in the documentation.

3. European vehicles with non-standard parameters

Even European cars may require homologation if:

  • the CoC (Certificate of Conformity) is missing;
  • the model is rare or old;
  • the vehicle comes from restoration, import, or auction;
  • structural changes have been made.

What has changed in recent years

1. Stricter controls at ITV. Any non-homologated part leads to automatic rejection.

2. New digital database from the DGT. Inspectors see all non-compliances in real time.

3. Tougher rules for US vehicles. Especially in Andalusia, where many cars come from Dubai, Miami, and Texas.

4. Increased fines. Penalties for using a non-homologated vehicle are higher and applied more frequently.

How we help with homologation

We handle the entire “turnkey” process, so the client does not have to deal with bureaucracy:

  • we inspect the vehicle and identify all elements requiring homologation;
  • prepare the technical documentation;
  • organize adaptations and modifications;
  • manage the technical report (Certificate of Conformity);
  • assist with ITV and DGT until completion;
  • save time and reduce stress.

Thanks to our experience in Andalusia (Marbella, Málaga, Cádiz), we know the specific requirements of each center and make the process as fast as possible.
